Immobilising device for the bearings of rotating machines, in particular electric machines. Use is made of a ratchet brake with a pivoted arm which is pivotably mounted on the base frame of the machine and, with its free end, rests with a curved surface against the circumference of a part rotationally connected to the rotor axle. The line connecting the line of contact and the axle of the rotor and the line connecting the centre of gravity of the clamping arm and the axle of the rotor enclose an angle selected to give slip-free clamping. The clamping arm is preloaded towards the circumference of the part connected to the rotor axle by a spring arrangement. By virtue of the ratchet brake, the rotor is rotated slowly in the case of shocks. <IMAGE>
