The invention relates to a method and a device for forming a homogeneous layer of tobacco fibres, from which layer a tobacco rod is subsequently formed. In this method, short and medium-length tobacco fibres are separated from long tobacco fibres and lumps of fibres by screening, with the use of vibration. The fibres separated in this way are conveyed away and then combined in a metered manner to form a homogeneous layer. According to the invention, long rib pieces in the tobacco, which have a particularly harmful effect, are aligned in a longitudinal direction by the use of vibration and transported together with the unaligned long tobacco fibres and lumps into the collection region of a conveyor leading away, which essentially removes the long tobacco fibres, including the lumps, and leads to the tobacco layer, while the long rib pieces are conveyed away separately. <IMAGE>
