PURPOSE:To easily record and update a data and a bit of index information, by recording plural data groups accompanying by discriminating signals on a recording track in a forward direction and a recording track in a reverse direction alternately, and recording the bit of index information on a dedicated track selected from the recording track in the forward direction. CONSTITUTION:When files A, B, and C accompanying by header signals HA, HB, and HC including file names are recorded on a tape 7 respectively, recording are performed in the order of tracks T0-T4, but, at this time, the tracks T0, T2, and T4 are set as the tracks for traveling in the forward direction, and the tracks T1 and T3 are set as the tracks for traveling in the reverse direction, then, traveling directions are changed alternately. Next, the final track T8 is selected as the track dedicated for the bit of index information, that is, a directory, and the directories (a), (b), and (c) are written on the track. Afterwards, when the data is read out, a CPU11 is controlled based on the instruction of a host side device 15, and a head 5 is positioned on the final track T8, then, the directories (a), (b), and (c) are read immediately, and the preparation of reading research is started.
