The rim of a casting wheel, for the continuous casting of a wide range of metals and alloys, has a groove into which liq. metal is fed, closed by shutters moving with the wheel as it rotates. The shutters may be twin-walled to permit the circulation of cooling water. Form the position where the liq. metal is introduced, until it has solidified, the shutters are clamped against the rim of the wheel, and each other, to prevent leakage. The matino faces are profiled, with radiused corners to complement the section of the groove. After soldification the shutters are swung to one side to allow the cast strand to be extracted from the groove.
