PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of a state in which an engine can not be restarted due to malfunction, by a method wherein the motion state of an engine and the set state of a shift lever are detected. CONSTITUTION:An engine motion state sensor 10 to detect the motion state of an engine is connected to an engine 5, and a signal therefrom is inputted to a control unit 12 together with an output from a shift lever set position sensor 11. When the control unit 12 decides by inputting signals from sensors that the engine 5 is stopped and a shift lever 9 is set to a drive range, a shift lever set position regulator 13 to vary the set state of the shift lever 9 is controlled, and the set state of the shift lever 9 is varied from a drive range to a neutral range.
