A compact reversing gearbox permitting an idling position in addition to a forward and a reverse gear position is essential in motorized vehicles such as racing cars, passenger cars, lorries, utility vehicles as well as boats. To guarantee reliable operation, the gearbox should be easily shiftable and robust. This is achieved by a gearbox (1) designed as a bevel gear drive with a drive gear (2a), at least one intermediate gear (6a, 6b) and an output gear (3a) in a sealed gearbox housing or cage (8). A profiled clutch bolt (11) arranged between the drive gear (2a) and the output gear (3a) slides longitudinally relative to the input shaft (4) and the output shaft (5). In a first position, the input shaft (4) or the drive gear (2a) seated on the input shaft (4) meshes directly with the output shaft (5) and in a second position releases the direct drive connection between the input shaft (4) and the output shaft (5). Transmission is thereby effected via the bevel gear drive to the output shaft (5) in the opposite direction of rotation.
