PURPOSE: To enable production of a small quantity of oxygen in the production of nitrogen, wherein the recycling rate inside a rectifying column is made controllable, in addition to the quantity of nitrogen product. CONSTITUTION: A rectifying column 4 for producing nitrogen comprises, below the air inlet point, a section 17, 18 enriched in oxygen and a sump reboiler 9 which is supplied by recycled high pressure nitrogen. An expanded liquid at means 19 for supplying an overhead condenser 8 is withdrawn at an intermediate level between the level of air inlet and the reboiler, and the liquid in the sump of the column, after vaporization, constitutes a small quantity product of an installation which consists mainly of oxygen.
