Optical reduction of non-linear optical amplitude distortion

Particularly in analog optical broadband transmission (CATV), stringent requirements are imposed on the non-linearity of the optical signal. It is known for the modulation signal to be electrically pre-emphasised or for the signal received in the receiver to be electrically equalised or for distortion to be prevented through the use of components with linear characteristics. In the invention, non-linear amplitude distortion of optical signals from polarised, wavelength-modulated light is reduced in an entirely optical manner through the arrangement of a polarisation setting (birefringent) component (PS) and a double-refracting medium (DM). The signal is fed via the polarisation setting component (PS) and the double-refracting medium (DM) disposed downstream to a receiver (E). The frequency spectrum of the electrical output signal of the receiver (E) is analysed and minimised through variation of the plane of polarisation of the light in the polarisation setting component (PS). <IMAGE>
