PURPOSE: To obtain polyethylene fibers having high strength and high elastic modulus with high efficiency by a simple procedure. CONSTITUTION: The preparation process for polyethylene fibers having high strength and high elastic modulus is characterized in that (A) polyethylene 10 having a weight average molecular weight of 2×10<5> -4×10<6> is dissolved in a first solvent 11 selected from the group consisting of cycloalkanes, cycloalkenes and their derivatives having the boiling point of above 100 deg.C, (B) the obtained polyethylene soln. is extruded through a spinneret 17 at a temp. of above 120 deg.C to form gel fibers 20, (C) the first solvent is extracted with a second solvent 19 selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, dimethylether, diethylether, acetone, cyclohexanone, 2-methylpentanone, n-hexane, dichloromethane, heptane, trichlorotrifluoromethane and dioxane from the formed gel fibers to form polyethylene fibers and (D) the formed polyethylene fibers can be drawn by the drawing ratio of ten times. The polyethylene fibers obtained by the above process are provided.
