Sintered silicon nitride material and process for its production

Sintered silicon nitride materials having improved high-temperature strength are obtained by the addition of carbon to the green bodies. The carbon reacts prior to sintering with the silicon dioxide present on the surface of the silicon nitride, so that no silicate-rich liquid phase having a low softening temperature is formed during sintering.
