DC=AC current converter for e.g. powering constant illumination discharge lamps

The current converter includes a number of capacitors (C1-C5), each charged to differing pre-determined voltages, together with a series inductance (L2) and capacitor (Cz) to provide an output current (I2). Switching elements (S11-S52) are included between each respective capacitor and the series inductance and capacitance circuit. A circuit is included to control the switching elements to provide a pulsating voltage across the output capacitor. Each capacitor is successively and alternately connected to the output series inductance and capacitance. The capacitor currently connected is disconnected before the current travelling through the output inductance passes through zero. The capacitor values and terminal voltages for capacitor discharge can be present so that the voltage across the output capacitor is of sinusoidal form.
