PURPOSE: To obtain a polyamide improved in heat resistance, mechanical characteristics and moldability by reacting a diamine component contg. 1,5-bis(aminomethyl)naphthalene with an aliph. dicarboxylic acid component and water. CONSTITUTION: 1,5-Dimethyltetralin obtd. by the cyclization of o-xylene with butadiene is subjected to cyclization with 1,5-dicyanonaphthalene obtd. by ammoxidation, giving 1,5-bis(aminomethyl)naphthalene. A diamine component contg. 80mol% or higher 1,5-bis(aminomethyl)naphthalene is amidized with an about equimolar amt. of a 6-12C aliph. dicarboxylic acid component and water, giving a polyamide which has a relative viscosityξrel (1g/dl concn., in 96% conc. sulfuric acid, at 25 deg.C) of 1.2-5.0 and contains at least 80mol% repeating units represented by the formula (wherein R is a 4-20C aliph. alkylene group).
