PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly judge whether a candidate factor has neuro-protective function or neuro-regenerative function or not by using a paralyzed animal completely recoverable within a prescribed period and to directly investigate the action of the factor on the self-healing period of the paralysis. SOLUTION: An animal (a model) affected by paralysis (preferably paraplegia) completely recoverable within a prescribed period is administered with a candidate factor possible to have neuro-protecting function and/or neuro-regenerative function and the potency of the candidate factor to shorten the paralyzed period is determined. The model is preferably a rat affected by paraplegia having an average recovery period of 6 days. The screening is preferably carried out by inserting a balloon having a maximum volume of 100μL, a length of 8 mm and a major diameter of 6 mm into the subdural cavity of an anesthetized rat at the T9-T10 position of the lumbar spine, expanding the balloon to compress the spinal marrow and induce paraplegia to the rat and injecting the candidate factor to the paralyzed rat 1 hr after the compression treatment.
