PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a halide glass material useful as core glass for optical fiber consisting of a core and its clad and capable of handling the primary wavelength used in the optical communication field as a targeted wavelength for its light amplification by incorporating the matrix, i.e., halide glass containing Gd ions as the main cations with Pr ions or Dy ions as active ions for light amplification. SOLUTION: This halide glass material is obtained by incorporating the matrix, i.e., halide glass containing Gd ion as the main cations, and comprising pref. 40 to 70 mol.% (hereinafter abbreviated to %) Gd ions, 5 to 35% Na ions and 0 to 20% Ba ions, with pref. 1,000 ppm of Pr ions or Dy ions as active ions for light amplification. If necessary, part of Gd ions are substituted with 0 to 15% La ions and 0 to 15% Y ions so that a sum of Ga, La and Y ions may account for 55 to 70% of the matrix. Anions contained in the glass matrix are preferably 7 to 23% F ions, 0 to 10% Br ions, 0 to 10% I ions and the rest of Cl ions. |
