The regulator (2) matches output to demand by alternately providing and withholding, in varying cyclic ratios, battery-supplied alternator field current (4). Output voltage sampling, and other parameter monitoring, provide input data. Special programs are provided for sudden load changes. The rectified input (5) of the 3-ph alternator (3) is applied to the vehicle battery (UB). Sample measurements, with alternator or battery temperature data (11), pass to the regulator's (2) digitising unit (10). The regulator's microprocessor (8) and timing unit (12), comparing instant values with a reference value and values available in memory from the preceding cycle, determine the operations of a field control unit (7), embodying a power transistor, which in alternate half-cycles of variable duration closes and opens the field current battery connection. Current circulates via a diode (6) during the disconnected half-cycles. When the load varies by more than a set threshold differential, a special progressive programmed response is made.
