PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve the examples useful for a translation job from a translation example data base. SOLUTION: A translation example data base 2 stores the translation examples consisting of the character strings of a 1st language and the translation results of a 2nd language obtained to the character strings of the 1st language for each document. A retrieval request input means 3 inputs the sentences to be translated. A similarity retrieval means 4 decides the similarity to the sentences to be translated each translation example and defines other translation examples having the prescribed relations to a relevant translation example in a point where these examples are included in the same document and also in a range set between the preceding and next sentences as the translation example context to decide the similarity to this context. Furthermore, the means 4 defines other character strings to be translated and having the prescribed relations to a relevant character string to be translated in a point where these character strings are included in the same document and also in a range set between the preceding and next sentences as the retrieval request context to decide the similarity to this context and also the similarity between the translation example context and the retrieval request context and integrates these four types of similarity. A similar example output means 5 refers to the integrated similarity to output the translation examples which are similar to the character strings to be translated.
