PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for completing the display of a photographed image. SOLUTION: An image processing part 6 applies prescribed image processing to the image signals which are outputted from an image pickup device 4 to compress the image signals and to generate the compressed image data. In a photographing mode, a CPU 14 transmits a control signal to the part 6 to output the compressed image data obtained via the photographing to a volatile storage 10 and a nonvolatile storage 12. In a reproduction mode, the CPU 14 confirms whether the compressed image data are stored in the storage 10. If the compressed image data are stored in the storage 10, the CPU 14 transmits a control signal to the part 6 to show an image at a display part 8 based on the compressed image data. If the compressed image data are not stored in the storage 10, the CPU 14 reads the compressed image data out of the storage 12 and transmits a control signal to the part 6 to show an image at the part 8 based on the compressed image data.
