PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the volume of a strip-like or a string-like material to be treated by directly charging the material to be treated made of a thermoplastic material in a volume-reducing device for discharging a plastic to be treated from a small-diameter side of a tapered screw in a volume-reduced state by charging the material to be treated from its large-diameter side of the screw by rotatably incorporating the screw in a housing. SOLUTION: The housing has a heater on an outer peripheral area of a small-diameter side of the tapered screw and a port for inserting the strip-like or string-like material to be treated to a body of the large-diameter side. In this case, the port is provided at a position of a top side in a drawing direction of the material to be treated to the screw.
