<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical member showing retardation characteristics effective for enlarging an angle of view and compensation with high contrast in liquid crystal display and having excellent property of making a thin device when used together with a polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation polarizing plate has a retardation layer on one side of a polarizing plate (3) and comprises one of or both of a polymer stretched film A(7) and a polymer layer B(9). The film A (7) satisfies Re=20 to 300 nm and Rz/Re=1 to 100 nm of the retardation layer, wherein Re=(nx-ny)d and Rz=(nx-nz)d, nx and ny are refractive indices in the plane, nz is the refractive index in the thickness direction and d is the thickness. The polymer layer B(9) consists of a coating film with 1 to 20 m thickness and satisfies Re=1 to 100 nm and Rz/Re=5 to 100. A liquid crystal display is obtained by disposing the above optical compensation polarizing plate in the outside of a liquid crystal cell. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
