PURPOSE: An idle control method of an engine for an automatic transmission vehicle is provided to keep the idle state stably in switching the lever, and to improve the reliability by distinguishing the idle air amount, engine rpm and the air amount learning value according to each selector lever and applying delay time. CONSTITUTION: An engine idle state is detected in starting by applying power to a vehicle(S100,S110). Switching of the selector lever is detected by receiving position of the selector lever from a transmission control unit in detecting the engine idle state(S120,S130). A control signal is output with setting the reference idle air amount according to position of the selector lever, and satisfaction of learning condition is detected in not changing the selector lever. The idle air amount is learned according to each position of the selector lever in satisfying the learning condition(S210). The reliability is improved by idling stably in changing the selector lever.
