<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device capable of improving converting efficiency of characters by using data stored in a plurality of dictionaries. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 12 selects converting candidates corresponding to reading of kana characters entered by a user from data 15 for converting kana characters/Chinese characters, and temporarily stores them in a memory 17 for working. The CPU 12 confirms whether or not the number of the selected converting candidates selected from the data 15 for converting kana characters/Chinese characters which are stored in the memory 17 for working is a designated number or below, and selects a found item corresponding to an input kana character from Japanese dictionary data 16 if the number of candidates are the designated number or less, and stores them in the memory 17 for working. The converting candidates stored in the memory 17 for working are displayed on a display section 22 by means of a display control section 21.
