The invention relates to a method for treating a cognitive disorder by administering increasing dosages of phenserine, wherein each incremental dosage is administered for a sufficient period of time to allow a subject to adapt to the dosage before the next dosage is administered. The dosages may be increased in any number of incremental steps. By adapting the subject to each incremental dosages a more effective treatment of a cognitive disorder may be achieved, such as by reducing side effects associated with cholinergic overstimulation at the higher dosages.</ SDOAB>
