1342038 Resin dispersions stabilized by a graft polymer ROHM GmbH 19 April 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 21907/71 Headings C3G and C3P A dispersion of a particulate synthetic resin (R) in an anhydrous organic liquid (L) is stabilized by a graft-copolymer (G) derived from: (a) a base polymer soluble in (L) containing units with side-groups comprising azo or peroxy radicals, and a grafting monomer composition, which is capable of forming a polymer which is insoluble in (L) and compatible with (R); or (b) a base polymer, insoluble in (L) and compatible with (R), containing side-groups comprising azo or peroxy radicals, and a grafting monomer composition, which is capable of forming a polymer which is soluble in (L); (G) being prepared by reacting the grafting monomer composition with the base polymer at a temperature at which the azo or peroxy groups decompose to form free radicals. Two components are said to be " compatible " if they associate and form a common phase; this generally occurs if they are each soluble or insoluble in the same solvents. The dispersion of resin (R) may be formed by radical-polymerizing a monomer composition in the presence of graft polymer (G), liquid (L) being added before, during or after polymerization. Or a solution of (R) in an auxiliary liquid (A) may be prepared and combined with a solution of (G) in a liquid which may optionally be (A), followed by the addition of liquid (L). Or a solution of (R) in (A) may be combined with a solution of (G) in (L), forming the dispersion of (R); (A) may then be removed if desired. Resin (R) may comprise a polymer of C 1-4 alkyl ester(s) of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, and optionally other monomer(s). Liquid (L) may comprise aliphatic hydrocarbons of b.p. 60-200‹ C., e.g. petroleum distillate, or chlorohydrocarbons or alcohols. The base polymer units and the grafting monomer composition may comprise a C 6-18 alkyl ester of anα,#- unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, or itaconic acid; units of styrene, isobutylene, or vinyl esters of higher carboxylic acids; C 1-4 alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids; styrene or homologues; acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile; vinyl esters of lower carboxylic acids, e.g. acetic or propionic; defines; e.g. ethene, propene, butene or butadiene; vinyl chloride; or vinylidene chloride. The base polymer units may also comprise di-(tbutylperoxy)-fumarate, -crotonate, or -methacrylate, or or or dicrotonyl peroxide, diethyl difumaryl peroxide, azobisisobutyric acid di-(vinyloxyethyl)ester, azobis-2,4-dimethyl-pentenic(2) acid dinitrile, or or or the mono- or di-amide or -hydrazide of azobisisobutyric acid; or the units may have sidegroups comprising azo or peroxy radicals, these side-groups connecting two macromolecular chains of the base polymer.
