Cyclooctylphenol derivatives of formula (I): (where C is cyclooctyl ring; X is H, Cl, Br or I; R is H or alkyl; and R' is alkyl). Bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents with low toxicity which are useful in human and veterinary medicine, esp. in the treatment of infections due to pyogenic gram-positive bacteria, e.g. infections of the skin, connective tissue, nose, throat, ears and, esp., respiratory tract. In a flask fitted with stirrer, condenser, dropping funnel and calcium chloride tube, cyclooctene, (110g), molten 3,4-dimethylphenol (122g), BF3 etherate (7.5g) and glacial acetic acid (3.2g) are slowly introduced, heated over 3 hrs. to 80 degrees, neutralized, and extracted with ether. Distillation at 130 degrees/0.5 Torr gives 6-cyclooctyl-3,4-dimethylphenol (160g) accompanied by a small amount of 2-cyclooctyl-3,4-dimethylphenol. Unreacted 3,4-dimethylphenol is recovered in an amount of 15g. |
