摘要 1365687 Solid state cells GOULD Inc 23 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 39470/71 Heading H1B To prevent build-up of a highly resistive layer on the anode of a solid state cell formed by the reaction of a mobile oxidant from the cathode with a constituent of the anode, the anode includes an additive material which reacts with the resistive layer material to form a low resistance product. As described, the mobile oxidant is iodine, the anode constituent is silver and the resistive layer material is AgI. The preferred additive material is Rb 2 AgI 3 which reacts with AgI to form the low resistance electrolyte material RbAg 4 I 5 . Preferably, both the anode and cathode are in the form of layers and comprise a mixture including carbon and electrolyte similar to the electrolyte used in the solid electrolyte layer of the cell, the low resistance product produced in the anode being similar to the electrolyte already present. In addition to the carbon and electrolyte the anode contains silver and the cathode contains iodine as part of an organic or inorganic complex, the preferred iodine source being an ammonium polyiodide, e.g. tetramethylammonium pentaiodide, N(CH 3 ) 4 I 5 . Alternative electrolytes are represented by the formula MAg 4 I 5 where M represents K, Rb, NH 4 or C 5 or by the formula QAg n I n+1 where n varies between 3 and 39 and Q is an organic ammonium cation. Other electrolytes include Ag 3 SI, Ag 7 I 4 PO 4 , Ag 19 I 15 P 2 O 7 , and Ag 5 I 3 SO 4 . Alternative anode additive materials are RbI, Rb 2 AgI 3 , MeNI, (CH 3 ) 4 NAg 2 I 3 , Ag 3 PO 4 , Ag 2 S. The cell may include the feature disclosed in Specification 1,366,535, in which the electrolyte contains silver for reacting with the iodine to form AgI dispersed in the electrolyte, and the present invention discloses the addition to this electrolyte of the additive material added to the anode whereby the highly resistive AgI is reacted upon to form a low resistance product. In one embodiment a eutectic composition of Rb 2 AgI 3 and RbAg 4 I 5 is used in the anode cathode and electrolyte layers to serve both as the electrolyte and as the additive. In several examples described the anode has two layers, the layers adjacent the electrolyte layer either having no electrolyte or a greater propertion of additive compared with the other layer. The cell is encapsulated in resin.
