A magnetizable ring 27 is placed adjacent to a flange 26 at the inner end of a coil shell 26 and a further magnetizable ring 15 at the other end of the shell determines the working air-gap La1 When operating in the biased-closed mode the spring (31) is placed within a blind bore of the core at the end opposite to the closure. The ring 27 is omitted and the ring 15 is placed nearer the shell end so that the working air-gap (La2) is determined between the spring-loaded end of the core and the end of the outer housing.
