Acyclic olefines, for example C3 to C30 alkenes are disproportionated using a catalyst comprising rhenium heptoxide and a support comprising a Group IV refractory oxide. Reaction conditions may be: temperature-20 DEG to +500 DEG C., pressure 0-2000 p.s.i.g., olefin/catalyst weight ratio 1000:1 to 1:1, GHSV of olefin feedstock 500-5000 v/v. An inert diluent may be present. The product may be fractionated and selected fractions recycled to the reactor. Examples relate to disproportionation of propylene over Re2O7/zirconia, Re2O7/thoria, Re2O7/stannia, Re2O7/titania, Re2O7/silica. Other feeds mentioned are butene-1, butene-2, pentene-1, pentene-2, hexene-1, hexene-2, hexene-3, heptene-1, heptene-2, heptene-3, octene-1, octene-2. The process may be as described in Specification 1,064,829.ALSO:An olefin disproportionation catalyst comprises rhenium heptoxide and a support comprising a Group IV refractory oxide or a mixed or compound oxide containing such an oxide. Refractory oxides exemplified are (1) zirconia (2) thoria (3) stannic oxide (4) titania (5) silica. The catalysts preferably contain 0.1-40 parts by weight rhenium heptoxide per 100 parts by weight support, and are acticated by treatment in air at 300 DEG -900 DEG C for 1 minute to 20 hours and then treatment under similar conditions in an inert gas, or alternatively by treatment only in an inert gas. |
