Filling of a membrane system with a working medium which is gaseous over the range of operation, comprises introducing into the non-closed membrane system a calculated amt. of (a) a solid coordination cpd. composed of a central atom M and ligands L, and (b) a multiple ligand, liq. at room temp., able to form chelates, and closing the system tightly against vapour, the gaseous working medium being liberated irreversibly by ligand exchange, on heat-treatment. Used for thermal control; the working medium can be dosed as reqd.; and the device can be automated.
