The device is used as overheat protection for a channel heater which uses electrical heating elements (3) to heat the airflow which is driven by a fan. The heating elements (3) are switched on and off by a contactor. Connected in series with the contactor coil (4) is the switching element of the temperature limiter (2), and there is an auxiliary heating element (6) in parallel therewith, which has a lower thermal capacity than that of the array of heating elements. This auxiliary heating element (6) is fitted in the channel heater such that it is exposed to the airflow and acts on the temperature limiter (2) in such a manner that the latter trips when the temperature of the auxiliary heating element (6) reaches a defined maximum value, before the heating elements (3) of the array are overheated. <IMAGE>
