The force-fitted dust cap may be of metal or plastics and can provide a degree of fixity to bearing retaining components. In its metal form, the cap has a shallow hollow cylinder (2) with a closed flat base (3) and an external radial flange (1) on the opposite end. A diametric tongue (4) is welded to the rear of the base. The tongue curves away from the base, fixed by one end which includes a short square end return (5). In elevation, the tongue may have a curved tapered shape which widens out before stepping in shortly before the return. When in use, the cap may be pushed into a bore in a flat surface of the wheel hub. The tip of the tongue and the return engage notches in a castellated bearing retaining nut. In the plastics form, the cap (2) and the tongue may be in one piece.
