<p>Structural insulation is prefabricated as self-supporting hollow beam or slab profiles which can be assembled to produce interconnecting internal passages for filling in situ with cast concrete or other load-bearing materials. The thermal/acoustic insulating material may be of e.g. plaster or cement filled with mica, cork, expanded clay, or of a fire retardant or incombustible cellular material, such as polyurethane, phenolic foam or (modified) expanded polystyrene. Pref. the insulation is prefabricated on a modular scale, i.e. corresp. to a conventional room height, or ceiling span interval. The internal passages are longitudinal, opt. with lateral branches to one or both faces; some of the passages may be used to accommodate concealed services (pipes, cables etc.). Simplifies construction, allows structural casting to proceed despite cold ambient conditions by insulating the concrete during setting. May be fitted over internal steel reinforcing rods mounted on foundations etc.</p> |
