PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compounds in high yield, by subjecting the reaction product prepared by reacting formaldehyde with a formic ester and CO in the preesnce of a strong acidic catalyst to the hydrolysis or alcoholysis to decompose the condensed dimer. CONSTITUTION:A reaction product obtained by reacting formaldehyde wit a formic ester and CO in the presence of a strong acidic catalyst, e.g. strongly acidic cationic resin, mainly a compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl) to formula VI, is hydrolyzed or alcoholized to give glycolic acid or an alkoxyacetic acid or an ester thereof. The condensed dimers expressed by the formulas IV-VI are converted into a glycolic ester, alkoxyacetic ester or alkoxyacetic acid by the hydrolysis or alcoholysis. High-boiling substances other than the dimers are almost decomposed and converted into the compounds expressed by formulas I-III. |
