PURPOSE:To enable rapid charge of a sealed storage battery to be carried out safely by providing an auxiliary electrode made of the same material as the negative electrode aside from the positive and the nagative electrodes, connecting the auxiliary electrode to the positive electrodes by means of a diode, and stopping the charge of the battery by detecting the charge in the voltage between the auxiliary electrode and the positive electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A nickel-cadmium storage battery is made of positive plates 1-a, negative plates 1-2 and separators 1-3. An auxiliary electrode 2 made of the same material as the electrode 1-2, which is connected to the electrode 1-1 by means of a resistance 7 and a diode 8, is placed in the central space of the battery. The electrode 2 also is connected to a charge circuit 10. The change in voltage of the battery caused during the generation of oxygen gas is detected by a voltage detecting circuit 11, which controls the thyristor of the circuit 10, thereby the charge of the battery being stopped. The voltage between the positive electrodes 1-1 changes rapidly when the electrode 2 absorbs oxygen developed at the last stage of the charge. Consequently, the rapid charge of the battery can be carried out without causing any unusual rise of the internal pressure of the battery, by detecting the rapid change of the former voltage. |
