Cutting optical fibre in fixed position - using two mounting jigs to locate fibre, cutter and drive mechanism to separate jigs

Method comprises (a) rigidly positioning part of the fibre in aligned first and second centring elements arranged resp. in first and second mountings, the first being movable, the second fixed, distant from the first mount and aligned with it along its axis of displacement; (b) marking, in one determined position, the surface of the fibre between the two mountings, with an impression; and (c) drawing the fibre longitudinally by displacing the first mounting in a direction opposite to that of the second mounting until the fibre breaks at the place marked by the impression. The location of the cut face can be accurately sited w.r.t. the fibre length and devices to which it is to be attached. Flat end surfaces can be obtd. The process is effected without the need for manual dexterity.
