A signal generator generates at regular intervals first signals which indicate in each case the magnitude of a variable such as the pressure of a fluid, which magnitude is planned in advance for a subsequent time. The actual magnitude of the variable at these individual times is indicated by generated second signals. Each second signal is compared with the first signal which is generated at the immediately preceding time in order to form an error signal. Each first signal is then corrected as a function of the error signal generated earlier in order to provide a corrected signal for the control of the variables. The variable can then be controlled in accordance with planning which desires rapid and substantial change in the magnitude.
