<p>The flat terminal (5) of the fuse is fixed between the two jaws (6,7) of the mains terminal. It is pressed against one face (6) by a spring (17) loaded articulated arm (14), and upon entry, rotates a wheel (18) and pushes it back against the restoring force of its steel clip fastener (22). When the fuse is withdrawn from the terminal in a live circuit, an arc develops across the gap between the separating conductors. For terminals modified by the addition of the wheel (18), the arc can only strike from the wheel face, which is electrically connected to the main terminal, rather than the face (6) of the terminal jaw. The wheel surface, being of much smaller surface area, sustains less arc damage and the surfaces of the terminal jaw cannot become pitted.</p> |
