An automatically operating testing device for testing the circular pitch of gearwheels and, in a development, for testing deviations in tooth thickness, tooth spaces and true running of teeth is specified, in which circular pitch testing is carried out in a single gearwheel revolution both for the right-hand and for the left-hand sides of the wheel, and the values for the deviations in the true running of the teeth, in tooth thickness and in tooth spaces are preferably determined simultaneously, so that no self-contained measuring instrument is required for this purpose, it being prevented that the probe can experience deviations, caused by vibrations, with respect to the tooth flank which is to be approached for the respective measuring position.
