A process for the preparation of polyarylene sulphides by reacting dihaloaromatic compounds with alkali metal sulphides in N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone as solvent, in which the reaction mixture obtained is diluted with water and cooled, the polyarylene sulphides are removed and further diluted with water until an N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone content of from 10 to 95% by weight has been reached, and the N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone phase is subsequently separated off at a temperature of >/= 50 DEG C.
