Prodn. of binders for newspaper printing inks - by mixing asphalt with mineral oil in extruder

Prodn. of binders for newspaper printing inks is effected by melting natural asphalt in an extruder at 250-300 deg.C; preheating mineral oil to 70-170 deg.C; and mixing the oil with the asphalt in the extruder at 150-200 deg.C. Also claimed is an appts. for carrying out the above process, comprising: an asphalt storage vessel with a screen; mineral oil storage vessels; asphalt dosing devices; oil dosing devices; an extruder; a collecting vessel with a heat exchanger and filter; and storage tanks. Pref. the process is operated in an inert gas atmos. The asphalt is melted at 280 deg.C. The oil is preheated to 110 deg.C using process heat. The oil is mixed with the asphalt in the extruder at 180 deg.C. The extruded asphalt-oil mixt. is cooled to 100 deg.C and filtered to remove particles larger than 50 microns before storage. ADVANTAGE - Binders of constant quality can be produced at low cost.
