Process and apparatus for circulating a liquid with the aid of gas, in which some of the volume of liquid taken in from the liquid in a container or tank is subdivided into liquid columns bounded by vertical walls, and vertical circulation flows are created by means of gas fed into the liquid columns underneath the surface of the liquid. In the vertical circulation flows the liquid in the liquid columns flows upwards and outside the liquid columns it flows downwards. For intensive circulation of the liquid at low drive power, the circulation flows are created in such a way that the sum of the cross-sections of the liquid columns is not more than 15% of the free liquid surface and the liquid columns are arranged so as to be divided into groups above the surface of the liquid, the mutual spacings of these groups being greater than the mutual spacings of the liquid columns inside the groups.
