"APPARATUS FOR USE IN AN EXCHANGE OF A TELEPHONE SYSTEM" As the result of actuation of a signalling key in a subscriber station (T1 to Tn), an exchange (VSt) is supplied with a signal characteristic which results in the connection to the subscriber station of an auxiliary connection set (5) which contains a speech recognition system (SV). The fact that this connection has taken place is communicated to the requesting subscriber by means of an alert-signal preferably comprising a return speech signal. The subscriber can then speak-in a predetermined word command as a speech signal which is recognised as a function request in the speech recognition system and the appropriate auxiliary function is provided. This transmission of word commands as speech signals facilitates provision of auxiliary Functions overlongdistance networks. Existing and conventional telephone subscriber stations for use with a PBX and having a signalling key can be used. When a speaker-dependent speech recognition system is used, a subscriber can be checked as to his authorisation to a specific auxiliary function.
