The method involves the use of a laser beam to create zones separated by gaps on the surface of a moving component made of ordinary magnetic steel. The zones and gaps form a magnetic pattern which can be read by a magnetic reading head. The zones and gaps have different magnetic properties which enables them to be read by the magnetic head.
