A pump unit for heating systems comprises a circulating pump and a canned motor between whose rotor compartment (14) and the pump compartment (13) is provided a dividing wall (12) which has a plurality of passages (16) with straight centre lines whose equivalent mean diameter d in relation to the thickness s of the dividing wall (12) is in the range 0.01</=d/s</=0.5. The cross-sections of the passages are selected so that the passages (16) can bleed air from the compartment 14 but after bleeding, will become blocked in the course of time by dirt particles contained in the heating water so that any further exchange of water between the pump compartment (13) and the rotor compartment (14) via the passages (16) will be prevented. <IMAGE>
