The invention relates to a display device especially for a matrix-structure display panel, consisting of at least one element, and of the type including at least one light source 1 interacting with at least one plate 2 having a through hole 21. The device is characterised in that the plate 2 includes a face 22 for observation of the display on the same side as which it is reflecting and the said light source 1 sends out a light beam emerging from the said through hole 21, and in that it also includes at least one blanking element 3 with transparency controlled by alteration of its transmission coefficient, arranged on the same side as the said face 22 for observation of the display. This device is suitable for producing matrix-structure display panels intended for displaying messages especially on traffic routes, for example on motorways. <IMAGE>
