The volumetric and chemical controlling circuit associated with the primary circuit of a pressurized water nuclear reactor constitutes an expansion vessel which comprises at least one water-steam chamber (36) connected to the primary reactor, downstream of a steam generator (16), by a sampling pipe (38) and a reinjection pipe (44) provided with a pump (46). The sampling pipe supplies several valve-controlled (42a, b, c) jet pumps (40a, b, c) which open into the chamber (36). The effect on these valves and on the pump (46) regulates the volume of water in the primary circuit. A pipe (48) controlled by a flap (50) automatically injects into the primary circuit water contained in the chamber (36), in the event of a fault in the primary circuit. The circuits (56, 62, 72, 84) associated with the chamber (36) and operated by the jet pumps purify the water, and adjust the boric acid content. The chamber (36) is also used for discharging the pressure maintaining device (16). The assembly is incorporated into the reactor containment shell.
