A motor vehicle with an upward swinging rear door, such as an estate car, has a rear bumper made in two parts (3,5). One part (5) is attached to the main structure (1) of the vehicle underneath the lower edge of the door. The other part (3) is attached to the lower edge of the door and has a tapered shaft (21) fitted to each end. When the door is closed these shaft (21) engage close fitting rubber bushes (22) which are mounted directly on the vehicle structure in the region behind the wheel arches.
