A high resolution light valve which optimizes the placement of a light switching region of a liquid crystal (71) proximate to a light absorption region of a photoconductor (47). The light valve uses a photoconductor (43) which has a transparent charge separation layer (46) to allow for the accumulation of photo-generated charges and concentrates the light absorption in a narrow charge generation region (47) where high electric fields are present from the junction of dissimilar semiconductor materials. The bilayer photoconductor (43) has a switching characteristic dominated by the light and dark carrier densities in a narrow reversed biased region. The light valve also uses a bilayer liquid crystal (70) in which the switching is achieved in a narrow active region (71) proximal to the light absorption region of the photoconductor (47). |
