A process for preparing magnesium salt of L-ascorbic acid-2- phosphoric acid ester of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting L- ascorbic acid of formula (II) with acetone to obtain a cpd. of formula (III), (b) dissolving (III) in pyridine/H2O mixt. solvent and adding a reducing agent selected from sodium hydrosulfite, hydrogen sulfide, cystein or sulfur dioxide, (c) adding KOH soln. to maintain pH 13 while the dissolved (III) is reacted with POCl3, and (d) reacting the obtd. cpd. (IV) with MgO. Cpd. (I) is a stable derivative of ascorbic acid.
