Producing nitrides of 4-valent elements consists of treating a cpd. which contains the 4-valent element in a gas atmosphere made up mainly of N2 plus small amts. of acetonitrile, monomethylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine or mixts. of these. Under the thermal conditions chosen the additive to the nitrogen atmosphere decompose at least partially to give CN ions or cyanide radicals. USE/ADVANTAGE - Producing Ti, Si, Zr nitrides. The nitrides are produced with high yields and at low temps.
