An optical transversal filter is used as a negative dispersion filter. The transversal filter includes a row of branching directional couplers at a distance tau/2 apart, and a row of combining directional couplers also at a distance tau/2 apart from each other. The second output of each branching directional coupler leads to the second input of each corresponding combining directional coupler. Heating elements are included with the branching filters. The amplitude of the individual filter coeffts. is realised by the coupling factors of the individual branching and combining devices. The filter structure is symmetrical.
